First let me start by thanking everyone especially are new members for the enthusiasm and getting involved in the GWRAA riders’ safety program. Congratulations to our new Certified Tour Rider (level 3) Rocky Houser.

Thoughts for Safe Riding for July 2008

Once again we are approaching record heat days, so PLEASE everyone, wear the proper gear and drink plenty of water.

                     BE VISIBLE

Being seen is one of the top strategies for avoiding an accident, riders who are set on wearing black or dark riding gear will not be visible to surrounding traffic.

Blending in with the often dark color environment is a sure way to find yourself experiencing a lot of close calls where drivers cannot easily spot the small dark object that is you and your motorcycle coming their way. Make it easy for these drivers to see you by wearing a brightly colored jacket or vest and helmet for maximum visibility.

Your headlight is another tool to maximize visibility. But some riders might think that high beam on during the day is a solution. But there problems with this option, if all the drivers sees is a bright light and not the outline of the motorcycle, then they cannot accurately judge speed and distance, which may lead them to concur they have enough room to proceed. By mounting aftermarket driving lights can help “paint” the profile of the motorcycle to provide more points reference to determine speed and distance.

I hope that everyone has a safe and a Happy Fourth of July Holiday. Ride safe, be safe, and look out for the other guy.
